Tom Ford has returned to designing for the modern woman with the debut of his new women’s ready to wear collection this past September at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. This will be the first women’s collection for Ford under his own name, and to separate himself from his hi-profile 90’s career as head designer at top fashion houses Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, he is speaking at a whisper.
Instead of following the lead of top fashion houses such as Marc Jacobs who have literally chosen to seat the media in the front row, giving them the public access way before the after party has begun. Tom Ford took a more intimate approach to his latest project, as he closed his doors to the public, holding a very exclusive event away from the public eye.
The “Hush Hush” event was held at his Madison Avenue store, where the only photographer allowed to encapsulate the event was none other than the thought-provoking Terry Richardson. Only recently have pictures begun to surface, but from the looks of things, no detail remained unnoticed. If that doesn’t make you start seeing stars, the models themselves were none other than the women who have inspired the 49-year-old American designer. Beyonce Knowles, Daphne Guinness, and Julianne Moore are a few of the names that were among the list of women to work the catwalk.
Why so secret? You’ve got to hand it to Mr. Ford. In a day and age that has given new meaning to the words instant gratification, Ford has managed to keep an air of mystery around the collection that will not be released until next January. With things talked about today and quickly forgotten tomorrow, Ford has been able to stay in the headlines, at a steady pace, that has only helped build up the hype.
Dying to see pictures from the event? This months’ Vogue published an in-depth article on the designer which featured a first peek at the collection as well described the man who juggles a full plate as not only a designer but as a producer, director and costume designer, (as if concurring the fashion world isn’t enough?).
But it is in the January issue of Brittan’s Harper’s Bazaar that has readers screaming for more. In the issue, which is on stands now, Terry Richardson’s lens reveals a one of a kind fashion moment, and a perfect way to ring in the New Year, with style. The dim lit lighting, yards of details, and the most beautiful women of the world all scream one thing: classic!
